In the fog of my mind that is this winter cold, it has been occurring to me over and over to revisit this old blog and to see about putting some life into it, and so here goes my latest attempt at doing a bit of writing.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
Each Ango, we take up ways to deepen our practice of the BuddhaDharma. This deepening can take many forms. In fact, it can take on as many forms as our lives take, but to access that freedom it helps to draw a magick circle and proclaim to ourselves and the world "This is Practice!" This helps, because if we try to simply go right away to 'everything I do is Zen' inevitably we miss it. <div>
<br /></div>
<div>
So one of the magick circles that we make is Art practice, and I love it.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
In fact, Art practice was one of my main entry ways into the BuddhaDharma. As a Jazz musician I could see the resonance between what I did with the music and what my teacher was pointing to, but beyond that I learned from his pointers how to realize this for myself. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Now most zen practitioners are not Jazz musicians, nor need they be. But we all would benefit from engaging the creative process as part of our inquiry into seeing our self nature and living it out in the world. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
So I would like to encourage each of the Ango participants, and anyone else who would care to do so, to take up the simple practice of Haiku matched with an image. Of course you can do other poetry forms or non forms, just do images alone or drop the use of the image altogether if you like, but there is something helpful about working within the traditional 5-7-5 set up of the Haiku and paring it with a well curated pic. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The topic of the work should simply be some moment of experience, a snapshot of one instant that you are practicing. Ideally, the combined text and image should give us a window into this experience, with out limiting the readers ability to participate and fill in the gaps themselves. In Zen art, one suggests and points but never completely spells out the topic.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Diado Roshi when he was teaching this would often point to the contrast between a Norman Rockwell painting and a traditional Zen art piece.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Notice how everything is spelled out for you here, what's going on, who feels what and how you are supposed to feel about it:</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgz71EBq4BBpCS9mZLM0km4GuL7u14_HUN3WvxGd-OiJ7RgzVRHTjLgDrd8lhV4pMC6W_JZV70nHcVf5GAW1PAgLnYaxJm0XxvzvTLXtZAkPDU7oOR0MDG1IqLCsN3Yea4xfXuI8iGSRfzw/s1600/%252527Dewey%252BV.%252BTruman%252527%252Bby%252BNorman%252BRockwell%252BPainting%252BPrint%252Bon%252BWrapped%252BCanvas.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgz71EBq4BBpCS9mZLM0km4GuL7u14_HUN3WvxGd-OiJ7RgzVRHTjLgDrd8lhV4pMC6W_JZV70nHcVf5GAW1PAgLnYaxJm0XxvzvTLXtZAkPDU7oOR0MDG1IqLCsN3Yea4xfXuI8iGSRfzw/s400/%252527Dewey%252BV.%252BTruman%252527%252Bby%252BNorman%252BRockwell%252BPainting%252BPrint%252Bon%252BWrapped%252BCanvas.jpg" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
in contrast with the invitation to discovery laid out with this one:</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg6WOA139zobGIHO-I3khtCqxaJWv3YzlLWUJ0ABkwO0CTzGMHdbwUzQRbgIrZqs22Ov3OaTLcG7opjpXJ4QYv6Jt6u8wh2HxBzVSk9MtP-Wm08EDLH3lEoEt7oxQpFqRiZNZ7tJ2Gw5Go8/s1600/zen05_1024x1024.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="316" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg6WOA139zobGIHO-I3khtCqxaJWv3YzlLWUJ0ABkwO0CTzGMHdbwUzQRbgIrZqs22Ov3OaTLcG7opjpXJ4QYv6Jt6u8wh2HxBzVSk9MtP-Wm08EDLH3lEoEt7oxQpFqRiZNZ7tJ2Gw5Go8/s320/zen05_1024x1024.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Both of these are great examples of what they are, and yet there is something about the Zen art that very much aligns with the experience of Awakening. The question "What is it?" stays alive and well within the Zen art, and so it should within our practice of Zen itself. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
So as a starter, what haiku would you add to the zen art piece above?</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Mine today is:</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
"Misty peaks arise</div>
<div>
from the cloud covered waters</div>
<div>
of my favorite spot..."</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
As a practice for Ango, I suggest that you set an intention to keep your eye open to moments that would be worth taking a moment to stop and notice as you move throughout your day, and to then snap a pic and add a few lines of poetry and share them to the temple FB page so that we can all engage with and enjoy them.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I've done 2 so far and I look forward to reading yours!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>

</tbody></table>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: small;">
In all Buddhist traditions, we honor a teaching called the five remembrances in which we recall that we are all of the nature to grow old, to have ill health and to die. The realization that all which is dear to us is of the nature of change and therefore that there is no way to escape being separated from them is the beginning of wisdom as we see it. It is actually because of the impermanence of things like our beloved pets that they are precious, and calling this fact to mind daily helps us to not take them or ourselves for granted.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: small;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: small;">
And.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: small;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: small;">
The true nature of our pets is the same as the true nature of ourselves, and the true nature of the cosmos itself. All forms are forms of this same true nature, and from the realization of that nature we can say that we are nether born nor do we ever die. </div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: small;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: small;">
And so our beloved pets, and family, and loved ones who have passed away are at once gone and we grieve their loss, and their true nature is intimately right here, right now. </div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: small;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: small;">
Of course the tale of my individual soul meeting my beloved pugs individual souls (I live with three) in heaven again once we are all dead is perhaps a compelling one for some. But for me it is at best a wishful tale, and at worst a way of bypassing a difficult truth which in my view we would be much better off squarely facing together.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: small;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: small;">
So as my oldest pug Louie has a harder and harder time navigating the day with each passing year, I hold him close and comfort him.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: small;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: small;">
And love him all the more. </div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: small;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: small;">
And when he is gone I will grieve for him for the rest of my days. And when I see another pet owner I will hold both them and their beloved pets with a deeper compassion than I do today. </div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: small;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: small;">
And yet, if I listen to the sound of the winter wind sweeping over the empty corn fields and subdivisions I will hear him still. </div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: small;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: small;">
He just won't come to me when I call him.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: small;">

<br />
In the meantime it seems that I'm fine, but I'm not going to be good for much more than lying around stinging and aching. At least for awhile...<br />
<br />
And for the record the outpatient folks at St. Lukes Hospital were just great, and I loved having family all around before and after. Rev. Do-on is doing an amazing job taking care of me AND Isabella today as they both make their way to Cleveland for what I think is the final infusion for the next 6 months.<br />
<br />
And Do-on has a strained ankle in the mix! No fair...<br />
<br />
Each sunday we recite the 5 remembrances, one of which is:<br />
<br />
"I am of the nature to have ill health, there is no way to avoid having ill health."<br />
<br />
This can seem abit pessimistic, or obvious, or many other things to visitors I'm sure, but for me it is an innoculation against unnecessary brusing of myself and others caused by unhelpful twists and turns in reaction to reality.<br />
<br />
The pain in the side is at this point unavoidable, but mentally twisting myself in knots on account of it is not. We experience ill health, it happens - to ALL of us.<br />
<br />
Another thing that this rememberance affords is a corrective to the 'blame the victim' response.<br />
<br />
In the wake of diffculty, helpfull advise is always helpful and generally welcome, and thats not the same thing as the egos subtle inclination to wrap up the difficult aspects of reality in a pretty bow with the tag on it saying something to the effect of 'this illness is their fault, nothing like this can happen to me because I know better."<br />
<br />
As best I can tell, illness comes from genetics, lifestyle, and chance, in a more or less equal mix.<br />
<br />
So, of course its wise to educate ourselves as best we can, and take whatever steps make the most sense to us with our health. And if we've learned a helpful thing it can be life improving to pass it that knowledge along to be sure.<br />
<br />
But, all the right foods, mind body process and hospital procedures going won't bend reality to our will. Not really.<br />
<br />
The cosmos is filled with beginnings, maturings, wanings and endings. The trees, my farmhouse, the cloud beaming in the middle of the perfectly blue sky out the window right now. Even planets and stars, and galaxies and the unvierse itself as far as we can tell (I love all we are discovering about the past of Mars, don't you?).<br />
<br />
So perhaps at odds with our first glance take with the line "I am of the nature to have ill health, there is no way to avoid having ill health" this rememberance of the Buddha is not at all encouraging us to just give up.<br />
<br />
It is not the cop out of "we are all gonna get sick so who cares."<br />
<br />
Instead I find in this rememberance an invitation to intimacey.<br />
<br />
Intimacey with life, with reality.<br />
<br />
My life and reality.<br />
<br />
Your life and reality.<br />
<br />
The life and reality of the cosmos itself actually.<br />
<br />
And within this intimacy - with all of its light and dark - there is the possibility of true freedom, and true joy, and the possibility of living ones life in a way that is of some use in the world that we live in everyday. Including that sudden diagnosis and its most unwelcome consequences.<br />
<br />
So lets deeply listen to and really play our lives as they really are.<br />
<br />
Play our illnesses and our deaths, as well as our triumphs and victories, light and dark, great and small, as well as that life of no life, the illness of no illness and death of no death.<br />
<br />
Let us lean into them and feel whats there, and not be afriad.<br />
<br />
But if we are afraid thats ok too...<br />
<br />
And with that, I can no longer put off the call to make yet another dreaded trip to the potty - this stings! Ouch!Rinsenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03381150941256655547noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7091694170702176850.post-77486304457445329432013-06-27T10:57:00.001-07:002013-06-27T10:57:17.560-07:00For the Sake of All Beings, We Vow This Conversation: A report from the Gen X Dharma Teacher Gathering Rev. <br />
I am so pleased to be able to tell you that I've offered both Do-on and Rinsen Denkai Dharma Transmission, and that they have accepted.
In our style this is the first step of formal authorization as an independent Zen teacher within the mythic and historic lineage of Zen Buddhism. With this formal acknowledgement, they will be able to do everything a Zen teacher may with the exception of naming their own Dharma successors. That, too, I am confident will follow in good time. There are preparations to be made, but I expect to officiate at the Denkai ceremony for Rinsen in January of 2014, and with Do-on the following summer, probably July.<br />
<br />
Yours in the Dharma,
Myoun<br />

And I couldn't be more encouraged and inspired.<br />
<br />
To begin with, we had a fantastic concert at the Toledo Museum of Art, with 5 female voices, reeds, shakuhatchi, violin, guitar, bass, percussion and a variety of Temple instruments. I titled the composition ' One Subtle Sound' and it featured text from the Avatamsaka Sutra, Koreas master Chinul and Dogen. And then what has become the core of the Ensemble performed for the music students at the University of Toledo and did a clinic for them as well. I got to talk about my studies with John Cage and what indeterminacy in music is, and what collective improvisation in music is, and what the differences are. And then we played a new composition at Crystals, to an unsuspecting audience that I was to later learn were electricians traveling back home from helping out the Sandy victims in NY.<br />
<br />
We have a performance booked at the University, a performance and clinic for the Mu Phi Epsi Lon convention, and interest from the Three Rivers festival in Indiana and the Queens New Music Festival that we hope will come through.<br />
<br />
And for me I find this setting increasingly meaningful to me and those involved in the project with me.<br />
<br />
Wonder where it will go from here?<br />
<br />
So do I...<br />
<br />
The latest tracks and updates are at the ensembles web site, join in and download some of the recent tracks there:<br />

<br />
<br />
Today I had the honor of representing area Buddhists at an interfaith service held at the Mosque that was attacked last week. I offered visible presence and some few comments on the suffering of hate, and the practice of compassion in the face of it. Below are some local news clips about the event. Earlier in the day we held our regular Sunday service at the Great Heartland Buddhist Temple of Toledo and I have a clip for that to share as well:<br />
